  1. Alternatives to Adobe Flash Player

A deadline more than three years in the making is coming to a close at the end of 2020. Back in 2017, the multinational computer software company known as Adobe announced that they would be ending support and compatibility for one of their longest-running applications: Adobe Flash Player.

The official announcement from Adobe back in July 2017 stated the following:

“In collaboration with several of our technology partners – including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla, Adobe is planning to end-of-life Flash. Specifically, we will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020 and encourage content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to these new open formats.”

To clarify, the Adobe Flash Player will be disabled by default as of January 2021. Any versions that are older than KB4561600 (which was released in June 2020) will be blocked and no longer function on their own. With Flash support ending, it will disappear from popular web browsers and websites.

Let’s take a look at a brief history of this previously successful application and other essential details relating to the Adobe Flash end of support.

Adobe Flash Player Background & Upcoming “End-of-Life”

Computer

As a popular multimedia software platform, Adobe Flash was mainly utilized for creating desktop applications, various styles of animation, mobile apps, computer games, and much more. Originally released in January 1996, applications produced with this software could be viewed on home computers, laptops, and other mobile devices.

For many years, the Flash Player was the go-to when an individual or company wanted to make Graphical User Interface (GUI) elements, online games, and other animations. It was frequently used for various formats including data as well as multimedia functions.

The data formats it supported include:

  • AMF (Action Message Format)
  • JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)
  • SWF (Shockwave Format)
  • XML

And since Adobe Flash Player was mainly used as a graphics and multimedia platform, it also supported vector graphics and raster graphics such as:

  • FLV (Flash Video)
  • GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
  • JPEG images
  • MP3 (MPEG-2 Audio Layer III)
  • PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

Around 2013, more than 1 billion connected desktop computers had Adobe Flash Player installed.

But with the July 2017 announcement of Adobe Flash support ending after December 2020, many people, companies, and software developers are now trying to determine what their next steps are. Whether users have Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or another web browser, changes and adjustments need to be made so that their applications can continue running smoothly.

Alternatives to Adobe Flash Player

So, if this application no longer has support, what will replace Flash? Since Adobe won’t be developing a new option, it is up to users to determine which Adobe Flash Player alternatives are available to them.

Luckily, there are a handful of great choices out there that have benefits and functionality that surpass what Adobe Flash Player has offered in the past. Many of these alternatives have advantages that include:

  • Security improvements
  • Less impact on laptop and mobile device battery life
  • Faster page load times
  • Extensions that will still allow Flash applications to run

HTML5

The most common and most popular alternative to Adobe Flash Player is HTML5. For quite a few years, there was a significant HTML vs. Flash debate over which one was better and would stand the test of time. But Adobe’s announcement that Flash support is ending stands as a clear answer concerning who has won.

Now in its fifth version, HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. It is a form of coding language which allows text, images, applications, tags, and other elements to be seen online.

If you want to convert your content from Flash to HTML5, your current development tools may already have this capability. You’ll need to do some research and see if your system has options allowing you to publish in HTML5. If so, you can submit it in the new format.

Ensure you take the time to test your application and identify any bugs or problems that may have occurred during the conversion process. You can then make changes to the game, animation, or other application to confirm it runs correctly.

If your current system doesn’t already support the ability to convert to HTML5, you will likely need to find either another application or pay someone to do it for you. And because Adobe Flash Player is heading out the door at the end of the year, the longer you wait, the more expensive these changes will be.

WebGL

Recognized as another possible successor to Adobe Flash for 2D interactive graphics, WebGL was listed by Microsoft along with HTML5. It also has capabilities to offer high-performance 3D graphics, virtual reality, and other visuals directly on web browsers, desktops, smartphones, and tablets.

WebAssembly

Additionally mentioned with HTML5 and WebGL, the application of WebAssembly is one more option developers can consider to replace Flash Player after it’s support has ended. One of the ways this one can be used includes the installation of an Adobe Flash plug-in. Options will be available on multiple browsers such as Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

Ruffle – Flash Player Emulator

Having trouble viewing a website or playing a game that requires Adobe Flash Player? Try out this Flash Player Emulator created by Ruffle. https://ruffle.rs/. You can find documentation and answers on how to install and use this emulator on your computer. For support or questions please contact Ruffle directly.

Using Adobe Flash Player In 2021 & Beyond

Now that you know that Flash won’t work on its own after 2020, you can start preparing for this change. Thankfully, there are plenty of alternatives out there and additional ways to continue using this popular software. Even with Adobe Flash support ending, you still have both old and new options available for the formats it runs.

So, while we’re saying goodbye to Flash in Chrome, Explorer, and other browsers, you can convert your applications to alternatives like HTML5, WebGL, and WebAssembly, Ruffle.

  1. I use Adobe flash player for some games I play. I am not familiar with what you are suggesting as an alternative for the Adobe flash player or how to convert or switch over. Is there a simple way for the basic computer user to understand? Please tell me what I can do to ensure I can still play my games.

    Thank you, Renee

  2. AWECO I don’t think you quite understood Patricia’s question, as I think she has been on the same web search I have been on. Correct me if I am wrong Patricia, but I think she is asking is there another programme (alternative to flash player) a home user can download for our laptops, that will allow Facebook and other web based games to play properly? Since I uninstalled adobe flash player, a couple of days ago, playing any game on facebook etc is dreadful. All you computer experts, talk in a language a lot of us, who are pre- 1980 don’t understand, as we did not have computers in schools etc. I got one of the first mass produced dial up computers when I was around 30! So am totally self taught.

  3. Do you hate these ‘tech’ companies yet?! They get to develop something that everyone relies on without worry, and then just decides that they don’t want to do it anymore! If we did this at work, we’d be fired on the spot!

There really should be some sort of oversight for their bad antics, and that means government, unfortunately! What if chicken farmers just decided they didn’t want to produce eggs anymore. If they can’t continue, sell off to someone who CAN.

Oh, is there an alternative, especially for older equipment due to COVID lack of work?! This is some sort of crime, although I’m sure they have made sure that there isn’t a law.

  4. I don’t know what to do? I have a 64bit/HP Pavilion x360. I see 2 adobe programs in my program list. Should I uninstall them both? or just one? or none?
    Thanks
    Stacie

  5. O sea que los desarrolladores que realmente quieran a su comunidad tendrán que rehacer todos los juego desde cero?

  6. You don’t have to uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader; that’s a different program. Only uninstall Adobe Flash Player.

  7. what about us computer stupid people like me that knows how to turn it on and go to games and play to relax after a hard days work so that we can pay for the computer then pay for the internet to play a game on i guess thats what happens to people that grew up and the new tech was a pager then had to find a pay phone i think those were a lot better times

  8. I am 70 years of age & with total computor inadequate knowledge. I have played Angry Birds for years. Can you walk me through the discontinuation of adobe flash & download the correct program?

  9. My printer’s HP Solution Center, which controls doing scans, went down Jan 12 when Flash Player disppeared. Do I have only the options mentioned to the others to get my scanner back? Also, I don’t seem to have Flash Player listed at all in my programs..? Thanks

  10. HTML5 is the way to go now.

  11. Susy,
Try going to microsoft and/or look for Scan and Capture software. I had same issue with HP solution center and downloaded S&C. only problem is you have to go into programne list and click it instead of going through HP solution center…actuall a better and quicker way to scan
    JH

  12. Hi Susy. Rob here. I’ve spent hours researching this and spoken with HP. Solution Center is gone. Without Flash it won’t work and Flash is gone. It’s probable your local computer folk won’t be able to help unless they have a pirate copy of flash they can load. If you are running WIN 10…no way that’s possible. There is no replacement for Flash. There are work arounds that require multiple doc handling but no “one stop shopping” like we had in Solution Center…and no comparable functionality. Sorry to be the bearer of sad tidings. Regards. Stay safe.

  13. So which software package would be best fir me: I use my computer for business and am adding a graphic software package so I can do 3 D Engineer Drawings and rotate them also using them for structural manufacturing with dimension’s: which is best HTML5 , WebGL, or Webassembly ?_

  14. So as I understand it and please correct me if I’m wrong, the games and lessons
my grandchildren use on ABC mouse thst no longer work aren’t a problem with the new lsptip zI just bought for them to use it is the ABC mouse program that we pay for that is what causes the popup saying Adobeflash is no longer available, or am I missing something?

  15. Support for the platform I use for my website, via Zencart is no longer being supported due to Adobe Flash Play end. I have contact my website developer on this issue. They said they can do nothing about it ,only changing over to a update
    e-commerce platform.

I wish anyone could help to give suggestions on this issue or someone has had a similar case as mine. Thanks

  16. This is so un-cool. To discontinue a product with nothing user friendly to replace it is negligent to say the least. All the games I’ve played to relax and pass the time are gone. I can still play games on my cell phone, what are they doing differently from the laptop?

  17. I tried to pay a parking ticket and the parking web site will not work because Adobe Flash expired. This truly is a public relation nightmare for Adobe. I was in IT and I have read case studies on some software calamities over the years but this one takes the cake. I will be interested to read the case study in years to come. Beware Adobe … you’ve riled a parking company 🙂 PS: I have an alternative to pay by cheque.

  18. For years I’ve used various versions of the old Rolex screensavers on my eight computers. They featured a cool watch (model of your choice) that kept time based on the computer’s timeclock. Apparently, the all used Flashplayer and suddenly quit working a few days ago. Now I know why–so here’s a big flip of two birds (one on each hand) to Adobe… if not the most arrogant, certainly one of the top three, software companies ever come down the pike.

  19. AND AS I TOO AM COMPUTER ILLITERATE , PLEASE TELL ME WHY I NEED TO UNINSTALL ADOBE FLASH PLAYER. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE COMPANY WONT SUPPORT IT ANYMORE BUT WHY UNINSTALL IT? I HAVE NEVER UPDATED IT AND I DO NOT PLAY GAMES ON THE COMPUTER (ONLY ON MY MINI IPAD) SO DO I REALLY NEED TO DO ANYTHING? I USE THE COMPUTER FOR WORK, I REMOTELY ACCESS OUR SERVER OR I GO ON MY BANK WEBSITE TO PAY BILLS OR I READ EMAIL.. DOES THIS REALLY AFFECT ME IN OTHER WAYS????

  20. It is un-cool and pretty pompous. These Adobe people think that with a few stupid warnings beforehand they can/will just shut down an integral part of running any and every game on the internet.

Stupid. Imperious. Foolish. How in hell’s name do they assume that they will have the support from the general public after this stunt. How long will it take before everyone “decides” to migrate away from them. There’s always a new, better product just around the corner.

If you ask me, they simply created a market for someone graduating from MIT or otherwise to be the next Larry or Sergei. And Adobe will be out of luck and ultimately out of business.

This will go down in history as the dumbest thing a “tech” company has ever decided to do. On purpose. Really, really stupid.

  21. I cannot livestream fb messenger video call as it needs flash media to broadcast. google chrome does not support flash anymore so left hanging with no advise on how to overcome this

  22. My son can’t finish his Korean exam at college because it was supported by flash. None of the audio reply questions. The professors probably didn’t notice the three year notice either. He has a tech ticket for student services who are supposed to have a work around. I’ll post what they do for him.

  23. They are nothing more than thieves. You buy something from them and then they shut it down

  24. The main thingb i think alot of the responders are missing is, Adobe has been telling your websites that you play games etc. off of that this has been coming for 3 years. those sites have had 3 years to get things changed. Honestly Adobe did its due diligence. That’s just my opinion. There are updates made to the background on websites constantly, and a games or feature bei9ng switched over to a new system should be almost invisible to a user of a website. So that even the person who knows nothing except the power button even on a computer would still be able to do what they did before. A User should not notice anything new when you change a site except “hey thi8s is nice, it works better” or whatever.

So if you have a site or something that dont work, there is usually a link at the bottom of a page that says contact developer, web master, or something. click that and tisk tisk them. or the contact us page most sites have will work too. they have had 3 years to do something. yell at them.
My opinion take it as that. welcome to replies.

  25. Susan,

    Some sweeping statements there.

I understand you’re pretty upset that you might not be able to play some games. However, it isn’t the responsibility of Adobe to support your games. It is the responsibility of publishers to author the games in prevalent, relevant standards, up-to-date standards, rather than relying on technology that arguably should have been killed off a decade ago.

I’m not sure you understand who Adobe are. “Out of luck and ultimately out of business”? Their core business isn’t distributing a free media player plugin for people to play games with. They are the people behind the software that graphic designers, video editors, game designers, web designers, lithographic print houses, in fact the vast majority of the creative industry rely on. They employ over 20,000 people globally, they are worth over $200 billion. They don’t NEED the support of the local public like you – how do you think downloading a free plugin is core to their revenues? With the exception of a few rebels who don’t want to pay their Adobe CC license fee that use alternatives like Affinity Designer (I’d rather use pencil and paper to be honest) the vast majority of creative professionals use Adobe on a daily basis. No one called Larry or Sergei is about to dethrone them.

This isn’t a dumb move. Not at all. Flash was appalling. Good riddance. Your games will be redistributed in a better, more secure, faster, up-to-date standard and you’ll be able to whittle away the hours soon enough and you’ll forget this even happened, whilst Adobe continue to make the software that a massive industry relies on daily.

  26. Telling customers that, regardless of what they want, you’re going to arbitrarily refuse to sell it to them, is not a good idea if you want to keep them. Agreeing the problem exists doesn’t solve it. If you don’t have what we want, PLEASE get it!

  27. Can anyone help?

I am a teacher and currently trying to live teach from home. I’m making a powerpoint where I would usually add a hyperlink to a short video. When checking my powerpoint, the hyperlink wouldn’t work and it took me to the EOL flash player etc. I’ve uninstalled but surely this isn’t the only way I can get a YouTube hyperlink to play? I didn’t know anything about this EOL.

Any advice will be greatly received.

  28. I installed plugin freemind browser in WordPress site. When run, it is asking to install flash. What to do…..?

  29. Kixeye War Commander shifted to HTML5. Performance is spotty and does not compare to the smoothness of gaming using Flash. Security? You can always make something secure. Switching over to HTML5 is born from laziness. Flash is way better for gaming in every respect. A shame that it is not supported. Kixeye having so many issues with HTML5 it is ridiculous how many glitches there are and will be. It is not stable in the least.

  30. will flash be back

  31. Hello to Flash users and developers: please take a look at the Ruffle Emulator: it is available for browser clients AND developers (games utilizing ActionScript 2 only currently):
    https://ruffle.rs/

  32. I have an old Mac desktop running OS X snow leopard. It will not support any updates to the software. Now that flash is gone, I cannot use my exercise website. What can I do? I cannot use safari as this older version will not support it.

  33. Enzo – Flash will not be back but vector graphics will. Why? Because it is sane.

    AWEBCO (Logan?) said of Flash:
” rather than relying on technology that arguably should have been killed off a decade ago” . .Really? And by what credentials do you make that statement? 40 years of computer graphics development? Even a sophomoric understanding of the relevance of vector graphics and why it is important? It appears not. You don’t point out the lunacy of claims that Flash had security risks as if any other platform or computer based system can’t be hacked – and regularly by bored 12 year olds. No Adobe shut it down because the big players saw vector graphics as a threat to their ever expanding empire of growth for bitmaps images because they can charge you for the increasingly egregious amount of bandwidth that it takes to display them.
Kind of like the oil companies, steel companies and automotive companies had which will also die when electric cars become the norm.

There is much more to this story but just be sure to note – Flash developed as a means fir creative people to build artistic applications WITHOUT PROGRAMMING. A purely aesthetic platform. As programmers inveigled their way into it (i.e. Adobe bought Macromedia) it became more and more programmatic until it emerged as Flex – a godAwful mashup of object oriented “Java wannabe” code libraries that slowly squeezed the graphic designers and other creatives out of the loop unless they had the cahones to step up and program – I was one of them. I have developed literally hundreds of apps, interactive web sites, “video chat with your doctor” platforms and business tools in Flash and Flex for AT&T, H&R Block, Capital One and others.

There was nothing wrong with Flash that didn’t involve Adobe’s eventual surrender to the evil empire and backpedaling on a proven platform for designers in favor of programmers. Those security risk are “bullpucky” – it is a hoax.

Vector Graphics will return – and it will not be WebGL – another programming horror show.

  34. No Enzo meant “vector graphics” will be back. First they killed Videotex (naplps) then they killed Flash. But vector graphics will prevail because, unlike bitmapped graphics, it is 99% compressible and infinitely encrypt-able if you take the time and due diligence ( i.e. are not lazy) to do it.

Oh and did I mention? It need not involve ANY programming! ;P

  35. I am in the same boat as the teacher above. I have downloaded powerpoint presentations as well as made my own that have embedded videos and now none of them wil open- I get the message to download the newest Flash, which I had dutifully uninstalled, not understanding that it would destroy my ability to present to my students. Is there a way to open these using some other method? I could not care less about gaming- I just need to teach my CPR classes. Being retired I was never told that these would not work anymore. I assume that if my powerpoints were not created with one of the alternatives like HTML5 that I can not use those to open them?

  36. Do you know how many games I have purchased that I have not even played yet that needs the flash player , what about all that money thrown in the water now this is very unprofessional discontinuing a app and not replacing with a substitute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. Google it:
play angry birds without adobe flash player

    you’ll find several helpful articles

  38. I have a HP C4480 Printer/Scanner that is unable to function correctly without Adobe Flash & Internet Explorer, both removed by a Microsoft update. When trying to contact Hp re this I am advised to ‘download these’, but that is not a good idea even if one could, if they no longer work! Can Microsoft or some other tech. fix or advise, I love my printer, it worked perfectly before this.

  39. Thanks for the clear & detailed description.

I have not uninstalled Flash player yet. Because of the dire Flash EOL warnings, I haven’t tried using it. Is it possible to use it relatively safely if completely offline (with WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular data, etc. all turned off)?

If so, if it’s used, what’s the worst that could happen? They say “security issues” – but if it’s only used while offline could it still be used without danger of being hacked remotely?

Is there a security issue with having Adobe Flash Player installed but not using it?

I ask this knowing, of course, that no one can guarantee safety especially when Adobe warned of security issues. Just wondering what exactly those issues are.

(I’m skipping explaining the background here – suffice it to say that I have many .swf files I’d like to view & prior to EOL, I could do so offline.)

  40. my pandora music does not turn on since flash has been discontinued

  41. Finally, thanks to all.

What is the alternative for Adobe Flash Player.
I need it for Grahps Presentations and others.

Anyone please, which App is suitable in place of A. Flash Player.
    Please help.
    Many thanks
